May the evil eye not touch you...
Throughout history, the symbol of the eye has been seen as a powerful force to ward off evil in many cultures and religions. According to the ancient Egyptians, the negative thoughts that a person carries come out of their eyes and reach others through their gaze. To protect against this evil, it is necessary to counter the eye with another eye. It is believed that any figure that resembles an eye protects people from evil and the evil eye.
In Anatolian culture, the belief in the evil eye is important and the eye figure is usually depicted in blue. The belief in the evil eye affects each of us differently, and we believe that carrying certain objects can protect us from it. Because we believe in the power of these symbols, we have fed their meanings with stories for centuries.
I never really connected with the belief in the evil eye, which I often encountered in the region where I was born and raised. I always felt strange about the round glass evil eye amulets in blue, black and white. When I started my brand in 2003, I realised that everyone was asking for "Evil Eye Beads" and I had to design this symbol. My design process started with the question, "What would I want to carry with me?" In 2019, the blue dot design I created with COBALT became the simplest and most impactful representation of the evil eye for me. During the design process, I realised how important it is to get accurate information and define the needs of the target audience before creating a design.
